She had arrived at her first destination, the vampire court. She was not alone. She never was as an ambassador. She had two guards with her plus a gift, it really wasn’t a gift more than, this is your kind of problem. They had found a stray Dhampyr in the woods around her court, and it had taken all her will not to kill the critter. But she had captured it, lured it with promises of blood. She knew that her beloved Gabby would probably be more protective of her than her guards. She could take them down anytime she wanted to, and she frequently did just to make a point. They loved her, no matter what. But her bond with Gabby was unique, if she was told that she had meet her mate, Gabby would be the first to come in mind. She was her ally her confidence her guardian angel, she was the voice of reason when ever, Kate lost herself in painful memories.
Gabby walked beside her as a saber tooth tiger, now she knew that would draw attention to her, but that never did bother Gabby, she was as much her sister as her blood sisters. In fact sometimes Kate felt that Gabby was more her sister than the rest of her family. She understood her, she was always ahead of her, she had never shown any abilities but if Kate had to pick one, empathy would be on the top of the list, now all cats like her had somewhat empathy in their blood, but this was u beyond the normal empathy. She could when needed upon draw emotions out of Kate, not that she ever did, only twice had she overstepped her boundaries and lessen Kate’s pain.
Now was one of those times where Kate actually needed some pushing of emotions. She was so close to the thing she feared and hated the most in her life. Vampires, and not just any vampire, no the royal court of England. This was the highest, and most powerful, and oldest of courts. She had never been there, but yet she found it without even trying too hard. She announced her business to a very crude vampire guard. He looked dumber than he was, but then again they always did. She gave him orders.
“I am Cathy Mackie, I’m the Norwegian ambassador for the cat family of the royal family of Atle. I have urgent matte to speak with your King Alexander!”
She turned her back on him eyeing her guards as they both reeked of fear. This would not be good. But between them an even lesser critter sat, she had made her behave, using her powers to settle her down, and making her obedient. She smiled as she let her fingers run through the youth’s hair, making her more appealing. Calling her young would be a laugh since he was more than twice Kate's age, and how she had managed to stay out of anyone’s radar was in it self something that made her want to torture her, but she could not show up at the vampire’s court smelling of Dhampyre blood, that would not be wise. So she would hand her over as a token of her gratitude for being able to stay in the country while she would do her business.
She let her hands rest on Gabby’s head as she whispered.
“Do you have your forcefields up and running, I can’t have these vampires read any of our minds.”
She knew it was not polite to use ones abilities at a court, but she would have to do and hope no one did in fact use their abilities on her. If the vampire knew her real reasons for being in the country she would not see dawn again. The tiger purred as she nodded undetectable, she smiled as she pulled the ear of the tiger. She would have to stay alive, dying in the court of the vampire’s would not be pleasing nor good, if she had to die, she would like it to be close to her beloved mountains and forests. She started to adjust her gown, she would not use an illusion on her clothes today, and she had to be sharp. No slip ups. This was the real deal, Akin would not show up and save her no matter how much he would argue with their father. This was in fact forbidden land, but she knew from previous experiences that announcing your stay would cause much less trouble than to hide it. Beside she would really love to see how the old and famous vampires did indeed look like in the living, or well in the undead.
She heard steps behind her and she turned around with one of her most charming smiles, as she was lead through the archways of the courts entrance. Gabby stayed close by. She did indeed turn more than a few heads. That was her girl. That would take some of the pressure of her, if the vampires were puzzled by her appearance. She knew of course that they would never look at her as an equal enemy, nor a threat, and that was the general idea. She was ready to meet the Great King Alexander, and his court. She would hope that her business would be short and that there would not be too many questions asked. The mere thought of sleeping there made her feel sick to her stomach. But there was no way around it now, she could have stayed low and visit the other courts, but if Alexander found out that she was there visiting every court but his he might come to the wrong, or in this matter the right conclusion. So she would endure another night under the roof of a horde of vampires. Blood suckers, parasites!
She forced herself to relax and to breathe deeply, but the smell of blood and agony that filled these walls made her almost gag, so she stopped breathing through her nose and only used her mouth. She was a vegetarian, which caused much laughter from her brothers and sisters. But they had not feed on rats and so like she had.
She thought back to her second kill, she had been tortured and worse by those dogs, but she had managed to kill 12 of the 21 vermin’s before they had captured her, When Akin had freed her she had stayed behind, hidden under branches and leaves she hid using her illusion gifts to make sure that the vampire court was blamed for the royal death of the wolves. It had almost killed her, she had passed out and when she woke up she had but one choice if she wanted to live, and that was hunt. And at first the only thing she could catch was rats and mice. She had never eaten meat again, unless she was in court, and mostly there she would just eat the fresh fruit and leave the meat untouched always ready with an excuse, it was too red or not red enough. She wasn’t lying when she said it was not to her liking she just didn’t explain no matter what they did to the meat she would not touch it, unless she had too.
She sighed as she stood behind the royal doors, an introduction would follow before they would open the doors and she would enter, this was customary, or it was in all the other courts she had been to so far. She might still be an apprentice in the ways of diplomacy but she was a fast learner, and over the last two years had she only messed up twice, both times, had been with the elemental court. They were different, she could not entirely place them, and she had once gotten her tail burned as she had to flee, as Gabby stayed behind to make a killing or two before joining her in their retreat. She had been sarcastic, they apparently didn’t have humor. After the vampires court she would have to find the cats court. She would be able to put down her guard there. She would be safe, or at least safer.
She heard her name being announced, what a joy, any second the doors would swing open, and Gabby would be busy with the forcefield and keeping her fears away. She could not show fear in a court. That would be the same as saying I come in peace but I don’t think you will accept. Nope fear wasn’t an option. She put on her smile as she saw the doors move. She went forward slowly, not as slow as in fear slow, more in the confident slow, the pace she used everywhere, and she knew it was a matter of timing if the King was angry or upset he would claim her head on a plate.
As she neared the throne she bowed down, just enough to show her respect, but also damn sure she wasn’t a hence man of his, she was an ambassador, nothing more nothing less, as she would live to tell the tale, only time would bear witness. She could only hope if they wanted her dead that it would be quick.
She looked up and into the King Alexander eyes. She smiled as she hoped he didn’t know who her father was. If he did he would quite sure ask why she didn’t use her full name. She never did it. She had learned that if you’re in hostile environment her surname would for sure make her head target for the bodyguards.
“My Lord Alexander, I am here in official business, and have on my way to your court fallen upon a stray, I have brought him to you, so that you can decide his faith. I am here on a peace mission with my kin, but I just wanted to pay my respect and gratitude towards your hospitality.”
What a load of bull, they both knew it, but she wasn’t sure he would call her bluff. She smiled as she waited for him to response, when he did she would know if she would se the sun rise yet another day. By the count of vampires in here already there was no way she could fight and flee her way out of this. So she hoped for a friendly reply.
She started to sing inside her head, keeping her thoughts free of bad memories and future plans, just in case Gabby’s ability weren’t enough. She sang a song by Lacuna coil, swamped.
“ When you're taught through feelings
Destiny flying high above
all I know is that you can realize it
Destiny who cares
as it turns around
and I know that it descends down on me
It's just another day
the shame is gone
hard to believe
that I've let it go”
Forcing herself to remember all the right words was kinda a trick she could use to calm down her nerves, and as always it worked its magic right away. Only vampire that had ever had just a little of her trust was this old timer, Zeth, was his name, he had saved her once, she had returned to favor twice since.
Gabby walked beside her as a saber tooth tiger, now she knew that would draw attention to her, but that never did bother Gabby, she was as much her sister as her blood sisters. In fact sometimes Kate felt that Gabby was more her sister than the rest of her family.
